Watch: For nearly 100 years, St. Thomas has used one type of stone from a MN quarry on almost every building

For nearly 100 years, the university has been using this stone on almost every campus building. They used Kasota stone to build their downtown Minneapolis location and the new Lee and Penny Anderson Arena where the university’s hockey and basketball team will play.

“Standing you couldn’t tell if that was an academic building or an athletic building and that’s part of what we’re trying to create. If you can’t tell what kind of a building it is, doesn’t really matter because it screams St. Thomas. It’s a St. Thomas building, a St. Thomas campus, St. Thomas architecture and we’re proud of it,” Brummer said.

He said the stone is integral to the university’s identity.

“It’s that Kasota stone, Kasota limestone that kind of blends and ties everything together. That is the most significant architectural component on our campus,” he said. “I consider the Kasota stone to be another extension of our brand.”
